SYNOPSIS: In 1996, a Vietnamese-American kid named Ái Vân from San Jose, California is sent to live with their immigrant grandparents in the projects of Vancouver, Washington. The story is told from the perspective of Ái Vân as they experience life with their grandparents.
ABOUT THE PROJECT: YELLOW BALLOON is a visual poem through the lens of a Vietnamese-American kid living with their immigrant grandparents. A slow, poetic meditation on the undeniable resilience of family and the nuances that shape our lives and make us who we are. YELLOW BALLOON explores the main theme of love through family trauma, identity, multi-generational dynamics, and adversity in racism and micro-aggressions. The film centers on Asian American characters who are beautiful in the authentic and ordinary. People show love in different ways; it can be through physical touch, active listening, through food, and through language.  This project is created by a team of Asian-American identifying people, majority being first-generation and second-generation Vietnamese-Americans.
PRODUCTION NOTE: Filming will start around August 12th for 5-7 days in the Portland metro area pending the availability of the main lead and supporting cast. This will be a paid casting opportunity under a Low Budget Agreement. Production will provide roundtrip flight, lodging, and local transportation for talent based outside Portland, Oregon.
CASTING NOTE: Casting is open to actors and non-actors for all roles. Talent does not have to have prior acting experience to apply. Open to union and non-union talent.
